Earlier this year, rumors began to swirl that pop star Dua Lipa is being considered to play Zatanna in an upcoming film. A CGC 9.8 that presents beautifully recently sold for $2,481! Why so high, you might ask? Well, several reasons. Barbie collectors are incredibly picky when parting with their hard-earned cash for that prime collectible, and a CGC 9.8 is undoubtedly the grade they go for.Ĭlassic covers for classic characters often fetch a high asking price, but no one was prepared for the high sale that recently came through for this classic Zatanna cover. The rest can be had for $50 and under for raw copies, but the real money gets spent on the graded issues. While there were only five issues in the run, none command high prices in raw grades except issue 1, which regularly goes for around $150. One such collector just dropped $1,320 on a CGC 9.8 through Heritage Auctions, an insane amount of money for a relatively random issue in the original Barbie run. With the Barbie movie coming next year, Barbie fever is high. Being a part of the classic Barbie zeitgeist, a feature film on the way with Margot Robbie, these pieces of pop culture are coveted by Barbie purists, who are willing to pay the price to secure a copy or piece of their liking. So much so that she and her chiseled chin partner Ken got their own comic series just four years later. Barbie has been queen since her inception at the New York Toy Fair in 1959. While children have slightly moved away from dolls and action figures as time passes, these now adults can’t wait to pick up a new Barbie each time they’re at the store. Not surprising when you have someone as prolific as Pete Tumlinson also writing great stories with the late, great Stan Lee as editor.īelieve it or not, Barbie is still incredibly popular. This book, in particular, is known for its incredible cover, and one fan decided they had to have it, dropping $2,949 for a reported raw 4.5. The point being his work was everywhere, and collectors today spend top dollar to acquire his work. He had a hand in early titles such as this Journey into Mystery, Journey into Unknown Worlds, Marvel Tales, Mystery Tales, Mystic, Strange Tales, and Uncanny Tales. The man was prolific, creating absolute spectacles for breakfast like the art gracing this book’s cover. Fans of the era, genre, artwork, and stories have one man to thank above many: Pete Tumlinson. It was everywhere but had a true home at Atlas Comics, which would later become Marvel. In the early to mid-’50s, horror was the bee’s knees to the people who consumed it.
